According to European folklore, Melusine was a water spirit who fell in love with a French prince. When he proposed, she agreed to marry him under one condition: that he never visit her on Saturdays. The prince broke his promise, entering Melusine’s bath to see her in her true form, half–woman, half–fish. As a parting gift, Melusine gave her husband two magical rings — much like this one — before flying off, never to return.
